FEATURES OF THE KUMON METHOD

Today we invite you to get to know the methodology that was invented more than 60 years ago in the country of the Rising Sun, where for a long time special attention has been paid to the early development of children.

Features of the Kumon technique

One of the most popular methods of teaching and developing babies among young parents is the Japanese Kumon technique. To date, more than 4 million children from 49 countries around the world are studying this Japanese methodology. Training is carried out using special training notebooks. Practice has shown that children who study using the Kumon method are quicker to master the curriculum than their peers. At the same time, their discipline and attentiveness are increasing, which allows them to achieve great success in the future.

Today we invite you to get to know the methodology that was invented more than 60 years ago in the country of the Rising Sun, where for a long time special attention has been paid to the early development of children.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE AUTHOR OF THE KUMON METHODOLOGY
Like many other early developmental techniques, the Kumon method was the result of parental love. In 1954, the son of a mathematics teacher, Toru Kumona, received a deuce in arithmetic, and a loving father decided to help him correct the estimate. He began daily to give the child the simplest tasks for additions, gradually (quite a bit) increasing their complexity.

The result was not long in coming. Very soon, his son not only caught up, but also overtook his peers. And when the son of Toru Kumon became the best in the class, the parents of his classmates began to bring their children to his father for classes.

FEATURES OF THE KUMON METHOD
Distinctive features of Kumon training, designed for the development of children aged 2 to 6 years, are:

Individuality. Each kid performs tasks at a convenient pace for him.
Educational (learning through the game). The author of the methodology insisted that learning should not be tiring and difficult.
Independence. Children cope with tasks and training on their own without any help. This approach to learning allows the baby to believe in themselves.
Perseverance. The child must complete the task regularly. So he develops perseverance, which, by the way, in the future will allow him to quickly adapt to learning at school.
Stage by stage. The main principle of the Japanese development methodology is from simple to complex. First, the child is offered to complete the most accessible and simple tasks in order to interest him. Gradually, invisibly for the baby, the tasks are complicated, allowing him to perform even the most difficult tasks.
Training on the Kumon technique cannot take place without a special notebook, when choosing which, only 2 parameters must be taken into account: the child’s age and level of his skills.

Kumon notebooks are aimed at:
Training of small motor skills.
Preparation for the letter.
The development of intelligence.
Account training.
Each Kumon notebook is dedicated to a certain type of activity:

Lines and mazes;
Drawing;
Applications (learn to cut and glue);
Maths;
Alphabet;
Time.
Each page of the notebook is one task in a game form that does not require preliminary preparation. For example, the baby is invited to cut the spiral in a line or draw a path along which the little bear can get out of the forest. That is, the child only needs to open the notebook and perform an interesting exercise.

HOW DO YOUR LESSONS BY THE KUMON METHOD
Before starting classes using this methodology, it is recommended to purchase a Kumon card, by which you can determine which notebook is best to start learning.

There are several recommendations for working with a specialized card:

The choice of skill individually for each child.
Select age by map.
Training should begin with the first notebook indicated on the map. Notebook will help to identify the necessary skills.
At the same time, the child can additionally study 2 more notebooks.
Classes should be held 5 times a week for 10-15 minutes a day. In order for the child to quickly get used to discipline, it is recommended to adhere to a clear schedule: classes on weekdays, and on weekends – rest.

Since the Kumon method does not apply the teaching methods used at school, it is not necessary to control the actions of the child. During training, the child learns everything on his own. All tasks are not only numbered, but also supplemented by symbols, so that the child can determine for himself what he needs to do.

In order for the methodology to begin to “work”, parents only need to equip the child with a convenient workplace, provide him with a comfortable atmosphere in the work area and leave the baby alone. According to parental reviews, the first learning outcomes appear after a month of regular classes.

DISADVANTAGES OF THE KUMON METHOD
There have been no obvious flaws in the Toru Kumon technique. However, some professionals and parents are upset that:

firstly, this technique will not be interesting for children over 6 years old (and I would very much like Kumon’s creation to include older children);
secondly, since the main focus of the methodology.
