SUSAN GOODWIN AND LINDA ACREDOLO EARLY DEVELOPMENT METHODOLOGY

According to the authors, this technique is the result of many years of research, during which they came to the unequivocal conclusion: the more a child learns in the first years of his life, the better his brain will be developed.

Early Development Techniques by Susan Goodwin and Linda Acredolo

Methods of early development are very popular among modern parents who seek to grow geniuses from their children. Therefore, almost from birth, many babies attend various clubs, children’s development centers and specialized kindergartens working under a specific program.

Note that the desire of parents to teach their children everything as soon as possible and immediately raises many questions in the expert community and among the older generation. However, one cannot fail to admit that the dosed introduction of methods and programs of early development into the life of a child can positively affect one or another aspect of the physical, intellectual or emotional development of the baby.

The main thing is to choose the most suitable methodology / program. It’s good to choose today from which – parents are offered a huge number of different programs and techniques.

Of the many well-known methods of early development (Glenn Doman, Maria Montessori, Boris and Elena Nikitins, etc.), the classes in the system proposed by Susan Goodwin and Linda Acredolo occupy not the least place.

BACKGROUND OF THE ORIGIN OF THE METHOD
American psychologists Susan Goodwin and Linda Acredolo have long been studying the features of the functioning of the human brain in the early stages of development. As a result of their scientific activity, they came to the conclusion that the sensations and impressions of children influence the formation of the physical structure of the brain. That is, almost any process in which the baby is involved activates brain cells and leads to the emergence of new neural connections.

Also in the course of their research, Goodwin and Acredolo found that children using sign language for communication:

learn to speak easier and faster;
have a more extensive vocabulary;
gain higher scores in testing;
play more complex games;
have improved communication skills.
The methodology of Susan Goodwin and Linda Acredolo received recognition in the United States only in 1996 – when psychologists completed their twenty-year study aimed at identifying the critical stages of children’s development and testing the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. According to the results of the experiments, in which more than 140 families with 11-month-old children participated, it was proved that the children who studied by this method showed higher development rates up to 8 years, compared with the control group.

FEATURES OF THE METHOD
The methodology is based on the effective development of speech, memory and thinking, which is realized through the use of a system of exercises and games. According to scientists, the impressions of children received from external influences (singing birds, reading poetry, stroking, etc.) contribute to the emergence and strengthening of neural connections.

In their works, Akredolo and Goodwin talk about complex experiments to study the development of the brain of children in a clear, interesting and simple language, explaining the importance of this knowledge to parents. The authors identify several very important stages in the life of a child:

during the first year and a half, the development of social adaptation skills plays a key role;
up to 3 years, children form speech and vocabulary;
musical abilities should be given attention from 3 to 12 years;
for logic and mathematical thinking, the most favorable period is 1-4 years;
the first 4 years are also very important for the development of motor skills.
Psychologists note that the development of a particular area of ​​the brain depends on the degree of its stimulation. For example, if a child regularly listens to music, the auditory region of his brain is more active than others. In addition, according to research, the development of musical abilities in the early stages favorably affects the areas responsible for mathematical thinking.

Unlike other methods of early development, the training program proposed by Acredolo and Goodwin does not promise to raise a “superbaby”. It just helps parents to take into account the individual characteristics of babies, which are formed as a result of environmental influences. Instead of comparing children with their peers, the authors propose giving them the right to choose – a small piece of independence that contributes to the formation of independence and individuality.

The methodology outlines the phased development of speech, talks about the features of the development of children’s memory, and also presents a number of recommendations that explain to parents how to properly help the child in the perception of the environment. Among the important theses proposed by the authors for the effective construction of communication with the baby, it can be distinguished.
